Know someone who’s going to Thailand this year? Perhaps your friends are heading to Paris for a weekend. As you all know, I love to travel all around the world and I have gained a lot of followers on this blog simply for that reason! I love sharing my stories with you all but I also have found that people tend to visit the same, popular destinations. There’s nothing wrong with that. But if you want your experience to be a bit different, you’ve got to try somewhere new. For inspiration, I’ve picked seven-holiday destinations which might surprise you. Check them out:
- 1. Slovenia
Home to quaint cobbled-street towns, spectacular scenery, magical castles and the beautiful river Soca, it’s surprising Slovenia isn’t more popular. You’ll be even more shocked when you see photos of Lake Bled. As the Huffington Post says, it’s home to the fairytale island of your dreams, where couples can get married in the Gothic church in a real-life storybook setting.
- 2. Mongolia
Did you think of Mongolia as your next holiday destination? Very few people do.
The Secret Traveller shares the secret of Mongolia’s growing tourism industry in their list of countries no-one knows, citing the opportunities to spend a night in a traditional yurt, watch demonstrations of archery and horse riding, and hike through some of the most spectacular scenery the world has to offer.
- 3. Myanmar
Forget about Thailand or Cambodia, Myanmar is the real South East Asian gem. In recent years, the government has opened its borders to the wider world and international visitors. You’ve now got the chance to explore its ancient temples, rich wildlife and meet friendly locals. Head there soon, before news spreads of how fantastic Myanmar is.
- 4. Kazakhstan
Next up is a treat from Central Asia. You’re advised to forget everything that Borat might have impressed upon you, and realise Kazakhstan for the success story it is. It might be better known for growing wealth from oil and gas reserves, but the country has maintained its unique collection of cultures and vast unspoilt landscapes. Don’t dismiss it easily.
- 5. Ethiopia
Ethiopia is a diverse country which will appeal to wildlife lovers, as it’s home to some of the lesser-known animal wonders on the African continent. So if you’ve done a safari elsewhere, head to Ethiopia to see unique mammal species including the Ethiopian wolf, Walia ibex, Gelada baboon and the mountain nyala, as well as over 850 bird species.
- 6. Belize
If you’re looking for a beach holiday, it’s hard to beat Belize. With warm Caribbean waters and high temperatures of 30°C in the summer, you can swim, dive, snorkel or just relax somewhere on the 300 km of coastline this sub-tropical country offers. It’s also surprisingly cheap, ranking fourth on Club Thrifty’s cheap and beautiful travel destinations list.
- 7. Bulgaria
Europe boasts a wide array of holidays destinations – among the more surprising locations is Bulgaria. With friendly locals, tasty food (try the fried bread), impressive architecture, fascinating history and breathtaking landscapes, there’s something for everyone. If you’re heading on a European road trip, make sure this special country is on your route.
